About the Global Progressions Earth Changes Weekly: ANNOUNCEMENT & FUTURE PLANS - 27 May '00 A final decision regarding the publishing future of "Earth-Changes Weekly" has been reached. This 'final decision' consists of both bad & good news, but I hope that, after having read the details, you'll look forward to what the future -- my, no, "OUR" future -- will bring. In short "Earth-Changes Weekly" is DEAD. ECWeekly publication is suspended *permanently*. It was started as a tool to track the predictions of numerous modern-day prophets, an annual tracking project that took place in 1998 and (to a smaller degree) in '99. This tracking project concluded at the end of '99. So, ECWeekly's main purpose, as a prediction documenting forum, was no longer applicable. That, combined with the fact that most time putting ECWeekly together each week was spend gathering, reformatting & pasting up some 3 to 4 mainstream published news stories (about "earth changes", etc.) for each day of that week, seven days per issue of ECWeekly, left little time leftover to research & write up *ORIGINAL* earth-changes/prophecy news articles every week. The two main problems with ECWeekly after '98, in my opinion, was its heavy "reprint" (versus original) content and the fact that only one person was collating all news (both reprint & original), severely limiting his (i.e., my) time for anything else. The time to evolve soon coincided with the new millennium. So, what can long-time ECWeekly readers expect next? A new, *MONTHLY* newsletter, that'll consist of original articles - from investigative news, essays/editorials, & humor to images - both by myself & 3 or 4 *regular* writers/columnists. Some twelve issues per year (with possible "supplemental" issues, if/when a timely story breaks, and its timely nature means such a news story can't wait to month's end) instead of 52/year. Emphasis on original work, then followed by up to a dozen mainstream news (AP, Reuters, etc.) articles - documenting the *biggest* earth-changes for said month - being summarized & then its URL reprinted/listed for those readers that want more details. Much talk has revolved around coming pole shifts on Earth, either physical or magnetic. Does the evidence bear out such an event happening? An 180-degree physical inversion of the planets's solid crust around the molten core would be the ultimate cataclysmic "Earth change". However, more than a few experts find this scenario most likely only if another planetary body - such as a 'rogue planet' or similar cosmic anomaly - passed in close proximity to the Earth, providing enough torque for such an event to occur. A reversal of the magnetic poles is much more likely, however, as it's happened before. Seen in the paleomagnetic record, locked into rocks of the ocean floor and in some lava flows, scientists think the time between reversals on the Earth falls somewhere between every 100,000 to 25 million years, with the reversal itself taking about 5,000 years. [1] Not that just the reversal takes that long, mind you, and therein lies the crux of the problem. No, during much of that time, the geomagnetic field strength decreases - which counts as part of the 'reversal' process. According to laboratory analysis of thermorenanent magnetization carried by clay baked in ancient times, the average global field intensity in any given region went through a broad maximum about 2,000 years ago. [2] After reaching a maximum, it then began its long descent. NASA's Magnetic Field Satellite concurs, confirming a trend that goes back to at least 1830; namely, that the terrestrial magnetic field is decreasing in strength. At a rate measured by the satellite, the Earth's field will hit 'zero' in about 1,200 years.[3] That, at least, is the estimate. One contributing factor to the decrease, and eventual reversal, may be intensifying core spots within the inner core that are magnetized in a sense opposite of the main field[4]; while competing energy sources, such as heat loss at the mantle-core boundary (itself possibly contributing to climate change) and growth of the inner core may also be contributing factors.[5] As the field reaches 'zero', or close to it (some estimate the magnetic field will be at 20% of normal during a reversal), complete with periods of rapid and radical changes[6], something much more threatening than the upcoming reversal will occur. First, as the field weakens, so does what many believe is the natural navigatory force for many living creatures. Studies have shown that whales, dolphins, birds and even mollusks and mice use the geomagnetic field as a guiding device. Some, like mice, use it as a directional guide[7]; while cetaceans use the total geomagnetic field as a map, not for directional information, as we would use a compass, but by navigating the contours of magnetic "hills and valleys" in a field that is anything but uniform.[8] Without it, whales and dolphins would beach in record numbers, birds and other creatures would be 'lost', unable to find their home. The effect of a magnetic reversal on humans is less known. Confusion might reign, and some theorize a complete 'reboot' of the human mind - the brain IS known to contain magnetite - might occur. However, as the field decreases (before a 'reversal'), one could surmise what may happen by looking at a recent experiment by Dr. Valerie Hunt. Hunt had a room constructed in which the magnetic field intensity could be varied. The following, as spelled out in her book, ''Infinite Mind'', was observed: When "the magnetism was decreased, gross incoordination occurred. The entire neurological integrating mechanism was thrown off. Subjects could not balance their bodies; they had difficulty touching finger to nose or performing simple coordinated movements. They lost kinesthetic awareness."[9] Could our bodies adjust as a much more gradual, long-term but worldwide decrease in the magnetic field intensity occurred? That may be doubtful, and if so then at what point near the conclusion of this pre-reversal descent would such incoordination sweep over the human race? Not that it would matter for long. Now, as the Earth - surrounded by its protective magnetosphere - travels through space, buffeted by the solar winds, these sun-derived charged particles are diverted around a 'shell' created by the geomagnetic field. Without that field, high-energy particles -- including dangerous gamma-, and X-rays -- would penetrate completely, to the Earth's surface. If television or radio were still in use at that point in the future, transmissions would become impossible. Electric power grids would be off-line indefinitely. And the effects on organic matter? Gamma rays, because they are so penetrating, can have severe effects on the cells of humans and other animals. As with cosmic rays, which also bombard the Earth at all times, gamma rays are known as ionizing radiation, which can cause a host of problems from cell death to genetic mutations (leading to cancer), in any living thing.[10] As was said before, the magnetic pole reversal itself would be the least of the worries, as it's unlikely future generations would survive long enough to see it. Long before the actual reversal itself took place, as the protective magnetic field weakened, the effects of the powerful and deadly rays it long blocked would soon make any fears of such a reversal moot. * Bibliography 1. On Wednesday, June 28th, I started out to get everything ready. While checking out the 22 feet, self contained, 1973 travel trailer, I bumped into a window I had opened earlier. It was made of aluminum and had sharp edges. My head came in contact with it and opened up a gash that nearly went to the bone. After wiping sweat and blood out of my eyes, I proceeded to remove some nylon fishing line from the Suburban. To do this I had to break the line by stretching it till it broke. It then snapped back and hit me in the eye and across the face. Actually it didn't cause any bleeding. I hesitated to tell my friend about this, at the time, because it might be considered to be a bad omen. After getting out on the road it was smooth sailing. The weather was about 102 and I had an air conditioner compressor that was about 1 year old. It started smoking and stuck in one position. After turning off the air conditioner it got to 106 in the Suburban and my friend got hot and turned as red as a beet. We had to stop and we applied water to the person. We started again and after a while the temp. got to about 95 and we were both Ok after spending some time in a K-Mart store. In coming into Mt. Shasta Properties, where I own some land, we noticed the sign Lava Drive in plain sight just off the road. This is the road that the Redhead was supposed to live on. We needed to get to our property that night so we kept going. When we got to the property we noticed that the culvert had been removed that we had to go over to get off the dirt road on to our property. I needed to go uphill and then back down to get a running start to get over the large ditch. I made it through OK. but the automatic transmission had lost a lot of fluid, started smoking like it was going to catch on fire and wouldn't go another inch. We parked there for the night in the middle of our road going to our camping area. The next morning the car would pull OK. I started to pull trailer down a small incline to the camping area. I wound up going too close to a tree while going around a turn. The car wouldn't push the trailer back up the incline due to soft ground so I had to put a wheel on the front of the trailer and pull it down the hill alone without being connected to the car. This worked a little too good and the trailer took off on it own and went down this hill for about 70 feet and stopped just before hitting a big pine tree. After about 2 hours I finally got it backed up, turned partially around and parked in the right spot. You would have enjoyed seeing this. When the trailer started down the hill, plowing up the dirt with the front wheel. As it went past me, I gave it a command to stop and it did stop after about 20 more feet of travel. That evening we got in the Suburban to go to a nice lunch, (a seafood platter for me and a steak sandwich for my friend). They were great. The only thing was that the car would only run in low gear and reverse. It wouldn't shift to the higher gears, so there we were going at about 25 miles an hour except when we were going down hill and look out here we come. We were thinking that we may have to get a rental car to get home. On this trip I seem to have noticed that many people had odd hair. Our waitress at the first place we ate at had blond hair with blue and other colors on the top. It sort of looked like a salad. Next day I went over to try to find the Redhead off of Lava Drive and went North on this road for about a quarter of a mile. There was one road turning off of this to the left but then the road came to an end at a steel pipe gate that was locked. Beyond this was the Forest Company land. So I backed up a few feet and on your right you will see a trailer house with another trailer house behind it. I figured this must be the house of the Redhead with her ex-boyfriend living behind her. First you come to a locked cable gate across the road that has a sign saying No Trespassing. If you don't believe in such signs step over the cable across the road and go up to the first trailer house. Yell out and see if anyone is at home, and remember that this lady has a 45 pistol and you just passed another Keep Out sign. If no one is home go to the next trailer-type house which should be the lady's ex-boyfriend. No one was at either of these two houses so I went to the next nicely furnished house which has a beautiful lawn and two large bulldogs that had some puppies. I called out and a lady answered. She said it was OK to come on up to the house. She said the dogs wouldn't bite me. They both came running up to me making all sort of weird noises as they came around me. They slobbered all over my feet and legs but did not harm me because I stood very still as they were doing what they were doing. This lady was the wife of Chris Hose the local electrician. He is a big fan of the Art Bell show and reader of The UFO Magazine. The wife didn't know anything about the Redhead but gave me an invite to a big party they were having on July the 4th. Subject: Shasta 2000 Trip. Part 2. July 7, 2000 I next took a trip over to the town of Mt. Shasta and while in a Burger King restaurant saw an unusual looking lady. She was wearing a long, bla-k colored trench coat and this was a very hot day. She was about 5 feet 7 inches tall with hair that was about 2 feet longer than she was tall. Her hair was wrapped in multi-colored cloth and it hung down in three parts. The last 2 feet of her hair was wrapped with duct tape. Her husband or the person with her said that he had prepared her hair and the wrapping of it with the tape was so that her hair wouldn't be damaged by dragging along on the ground. I saw this person's face more than once and she appeared to have bl-ck skin and he husband was bla-k also. She also had coins wrapped across her forehead. Another strange thing about all of this is that she had her hair on top part of her head made up in something that looked like a helmet. On top of her head her hair was wrapped with cloth and made up into something that looked like horns coming out of the top of her head. They were about 3 inches long. She appeared to be about 35 years old and the man was about 55. He was evidently a bl-ck person who had been born in the USA. He was really having a lot of fun and talking to everyone. At times he would crack-up laughing. I went over to where he was talking to a lady who was with two teenage girls. One of them was of Chinese descent and was wearing a midriff. I could see that she had numbers and letters that were printed of her back and these extended down her back and they just kept on going. We all went over to where the lady with the long hair was and the man said that if I looked at her face I could see that she was an b-ack Egyptian. I then touch her arm and very lightly tried to get her to turn around so I could get a better look at her. She then turned back around in a very forceful way to show me that she didn't want me to look at her face. Actually I had seen her face several times in the restaurant as she was walking around but I wanted to get a closer look. These people had three small children with them and their hair was made up in what I call pigtails. They were pretty cute kids but very independent and proceeded to thrown temper tantrums at times. These people had a lot of camping gear with them and were probably homeless. The man said they were looking for a place where they would be accepted. He said the law had hustled them but had given them some money. One person said later that it was probably to get them out of town. The lady with the two teenagers then gave the man a 20 dollar bill and said that she hoped it would help them along their journey. He took it and looked to see that his wife didn't see him, then put it in his pocket secretly. He saw that his child saw him do this and then he in a joking manner motioned for her not to tell her mother about it. That's the last I saw of them. Later I tried to get my transmission fixed and the first company person said they could look at in 12 days and they send all their transmissions out to be repaired. He referred me to another person who fixed it in 2 hours. My friend gave him a nice tip over and above the amount of the bill. It turned out to be that the gear going to the governor of the transmission and a few teeth chipped off of it. So we were up and running again. Next I found out that the two houses that I thought the Redhead and her ex-boyfriend friend lived in were owned by a group of policemen who liked to come up there and hunt deer. It has a sign in front of it that says, "Tony's Town". It was said that when they were there a lot of drinking and shooting off of guns transpires. The house I thought was owned by the ex-boyfriend was owned by a nice couple who come up on weekends from the San Francisco bay area. So it looked like I wasn't going to find the Redhead, but next I went over to talk with Chris the local electrician. We had a long discussion about some very deep things and it appears that I had shown up just in time to answer a lot of questions that he had in his mind. He then said that the person that I was seeking may be the Pig Lady and that he would contact a friend of his and get me the address of this person by July the 4th. I then left him and was thinking, "Oh no. These people refer to one another by the name of Crazy, Kooks and now here comes one that they call the Pig Lady. I wonder if she looks like a pig?" I got the notion to go over and see my friend called Louis E. Wright. Some people call him Louie. He sees a lot of things that are very unusual and sometime goes around a night wearing a whi-e robe and sandals so you can figure what they call him. I asked him if he knew anything about the Pig Lady. He said that he knew them well. He said they lived over on Timberline Court just off of Wintoon. So now it looked like I'm back in business. It looks like the Redhead may live on Timberline Court rather than Lava Court. Subject: Shasta 2000 Trip. Part 3. July 8, 2000. Louie then rode with me over to the spot where the Redhead was supposed to live. On the way over there my window handle broke in my hand so I couldn't roll down the window. Louie then said, "Oh that's no problem. I have the same year of pickup as this Suburban and I've had my window handles break also. I even have the special tool to remove them. I'll pick you one up in Mt. Shasta City and put it on for you." Sure enough I had a new handle on my car in less than 3 hours. When we were going past the Redhead's house he didn't want them to see him because he had run in with the ex-boyfriend about his female dog having some puppies with the man's male dog and he wasn't going to talk to him again until the person came over and talked with him first. I followed his orders and we did find where they lived. Louie also informed me that the lady was called The Pig Lady because she used to own one or more pigs. That was a relief to know. I next went over to the property of the Redhead and all I could find was a lot of trailer houses and two small, cute puppies in a fenced area. I came back the next day and stopped in front to the area. I could hear some dogs barking so I knew someone was home. A man came out with a dog that was really barking at me. The man came over, his name was Jim and he was the person called the ex-boyfriend.. He was convinced that due to the fact that I was driving a big, white Suburban, that I must be a working for the F-I, CI-, N-A or what have you. He got right up in my face, not more than 6 inches from my nose and started asking me questions. After asking me all of these questions and finding our that both of us had been in the home of Sister Thredra, at different times, he was ready to nearly let me meet the Redhead. First of all he demanded that I listen to all of his life story, well nearly all of it. He wanted to let me know that he was an ex-marine and had served in Vietnam. He had been thrown in prison for 20 to 40 years for fighting with two officers but was let out with a bad conduct discharge. After listening to all of this he decided to let me go up and meet the Redhead. Just before getting to her trailer, he suggested that we have some fun and tell her that I was a member of the FB-. I told him that I wouldn't do it because I had to be perfectly honest with my dealings with her. This made him very mad at me. He told me earlier that his dog didn't bite but her dog did bite. He opened a door to the trailer and that dog came after me like he was going to have me for dinner. I closed the door on his nose and wouldn't open the door until they had him under control. Finally they calmed him down and he didn't bother me. These two dogs had a habit of smelling you in a certain place that will go unmentioned until they checked you out and then they would leave you alone. So finally I met who I think is the Redhead. Her name is Pat. She had nice hair that she had colored a sort of a blondish orange or red. She was in her 40's and 50's. I asked her about my friend giving her a ride over to McCloud, Calif. to pickup her truck that had been repaired and she said that she didn't know whether that had happened or not. About that time Jim really got out of control. He was yelling at for me not to believe her because she is on drugs. He was yelling for her not to tell me anything because I worked for the -BI. She would try to tell me something and he would be yelling at her to try to get her to shut up. It turned out that she didn't have any 200 year old books, that looked new from the people in the mountain. She did have some very old reference books that looked like an encyclopedia of religion. They were written in the German language and showed pictures of Buddha and other statues. Jim could read German and he looked at them and read the introduction and said that the book said it was written in German. They were practically useless. Pat thought that they may have been dropped by some Lemurian on the front of their property but she didn't really know where they came from. Next I asked her about the 7 foot tall Lemurians who come on her property. She said that they come on her property but the only one who could see them was her grand daughter. As you know some young people claim to see imaginary playmates but after they are whipped and told they would be thrown in the nuthouse they get the message that they had better shut up about seeing them. Finally most of them in later life can no longer see these imaginary friends. It seems that these people from the mountain come into the area and I think they can probably be seen by an honest psychic who can see the aura and ghosts. I then asked her about the path that is on her property. Jim then really got mad and tried to get me in a fight. He is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 165 lbs. I am 5 feet 11 and three quarters inches tall and weigh about 240 lbs. I had a been a lineman playing football at a college in Abilene, Texas. I was in excellent shape at the time and took a job as an attendant at an epileptic colony there. Two or three of us were expected to control about 80 inmates in what was called the Criminal Ward. These people were murderers and other things. They taught me that if things really got out of hand and it looked like we were going to get killed by the inmates that I was to use a certain method to defend myself. They taught me to use a single blow to the head that would kill a person or a choke hold that would break a person's neck. I didn't divulge this to to Jim but I kept in control. He was now talking to me closer than 6 inches away from my nose and making a tight fist while holding it in my face. He was also making motions like he was going to back hand me and also beat her up. He cursed and called me about everything in the book. Subject: Shasta 2000 Trip. Part 4 of 4. July 9, 2000. We next started out to find the path where I thought the people from inside of Mt. Shasta stayed. As we were walking along near her car an explosion happened. We all jumped. It turned out that there was a propane bottle that was setting in the sun getting hot. Just as we went by, it blew off the excess pressure. After getting over that we went past a trailer house that had a door that was partially torn off by a bear. Two bears had been killed in the area last year. We finally got to the path. The thing that was odd about this was that the path was that it was not particularly famous because it had Lemurians on it who were 7 feet tall but it was that it had a family of what I will only called the hairy people on it. Pat said the male was 10 feet tall. There was also a mother and two young children. This was one of the things that was making Jim so mad. He didn't want me to know about this because he thought hunters may come in and shot these beings. He said he had seen them and they wouldn't hurt anyone. Pat showed me a footprint of one of the young ones who was about the size of a human being. She pointed out the unusual shape of the foot and how the foot had picked up pebbles which had stuck to the pad of the foot and this had reproduced on the footprint. These beings are evidently in the physical form. Pat wants to get some infra red pictures of them. She gave me her address and it is: Pat Thompson Box 761 McCloud, Calif. 96507. I would suggest that if you write her you send a self addressed stamped envelope to keep her expenses down. They don't have a telephone but she does have an emergency cell-phone. Then she also told me about their both being taken up by a space craft in her car. Jim talked about being on the sides of Mt. Shasta on a certain rock and the mountain opening up. When I left I said, "G-d bless you" to Pat and she said the same to me. Jim got mad because I didn't say a Go- bless you to him. While I was walking off to my car he was behind me and said, "I'll just kill you and drag you body out to the road." I continued to walk at my regular pace. I got into the car and he came around and talked to me. I made peace with and we both shook hands is very male type of way with your thumb pointed up. He offered to go and show me the rock where the mountain opened up but I didn't respond to that. I said G-d bless you to him and parted as friends. Some may very well be disappointed in the preceding 'revelations' from what some considered, at the time, a low-level member of the intelligence community, but a member who was indeed on the "up and up" even though these revelations do not agree with, nor fit into, the currently accepted UFO paradigm. It is for that very reason they should at least be considered. II. 'Men in Black' and The Grays: Archetype or Reality? Throughout history both "men in black" and "magical fairy folk" have been recurring archetypal figures, the former representing darkness or evil while the latter offered light and hope. Is it just coincidence when present-day people speak of MiB encounters, they use descriptions like "sinister" and "exuding evil"? I think not. However, are these descriptions the result of actual recalled feelings or the fact that after tapping into the collective unconscious, and recalling historical archetype, these dormant associative feelings are brought to the fore? That, when combined with a fringe media perpetuated set of parameters defining MiB, makes for a powerful influence indeed. Additionally, an ever-changing (ever-evolving?) experience centering around "magical fairy folk" has brought another archetype into the present. In the days of yore, these 'lil folk wielded "magic wands" and spoke in magical tongues. In this present day of advancing technology and human diversity, where every corner of a once vast world has been studied and compartmentalized, we look skyward for our mysteries. And we take our archetypal imagery with us. No longer believing in true magic, we see very advanced technology as a bit magical. No longer finding comfort in the hidden corners of our ever-shrinking world, the archetype once found there has taken on a new visage. It is no longer inner-worldly, it is other worldly. However, it still possesses its "magic wand" and speaks in a magical tongue we call telepathy. And experiences with these beings often result in ultimately positive and hopeful feelings. Sadly, there are those who would use our own collective unconscious against us. Remember, it is their archetypal imagery too. Yes, hypnoregressive therapy may be untrustworthy. Especially when up against planted 'false memories' that dovetail nicely with timeless archetypes. It makes it so easy to believe, because we want to believe. It works on so many levels it is incredible. The reason we cannot get to the truth may be two-fold. One, there are those with more resources who can easily circumvent the truthseekers. The other reason - there very well may be more than one truth, or more than more variation on, or element of, the truth. Archetypes themselves are based on an original truth. In the case of "Men in Black", more than one group may be using the archetype to create a "new truth" with their actions. With The Grays, its a "the chicken or the egg" dilemma. Is the archetype based on a race which has visited us for eons? Or is the archetype, based on a now long gone earthly race/species, being used to create a modern mythology behind which "the powers that be" can hide, all the while manipulating us? Where the manipulation with that archetypal imagery ends and the truth (or true experience) begins is the big question. Many little answers, revealed slowly ("like an onion being peeled") must certainly be connected to complete the answer to a big question. III. Recollections and Memetics A. Recollections "The state of our mind-control technology comes into question. Is it possible, through remote means, to have people believe they have been abducted, in such a fashion, a scenario put into their heads? The answer - it does seem possible to do that." - Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut In a 1997 radio interview, author, and abductee, Whitley Strieber offered up an interesting recollection of the night he alleges an implant was embedded in his ear. It started at his remote cabin home. A recollection of: Waking up, in the middle of the night, upon hearing the crunch of gravel outside, and below, his second-story (open) bedroom window - the sound of a vehicle pulling up the driveway. Laying awake, hearing a voice outside saying "Condition Red", and, upon sitting up in his bed, seeing a man and woman, in military-type garb, standing in the doorway of the bedroom. Getting out of bed, and being rushed by these two individuals. Being put under. Waking up in the morning, soon to find an implant embedded in the flesh of his ear. And finding the outside garage door (directly below the bedroom) open. Even though the house alarm is still set. And the door being shut on the previous evening. Did Strieber inadvertently glimpse part of the true scenario, one in which he has long been caught up in but perhaps never truly "saw" - except for what they wanted him to "see"? They being humans, feeding him imagery of an alien nature? Imagery, as discussed in II., that fits so well within the context of unconscious archetypes? Or, was the event of that night only one small part of a much larger endeavor, involving more than just the humans present that night? Again, the chicken or the egg. If, indeed, his tormentors are humans only, it is a scenario far more sinister than any involving true extraterrestrials. B. Memetics or Genetics? "Language is a virus..... from outer space." - Laurie Anderson Just when you think you have it figured out, the rules seem to change. Can literally generations of genetic memory be circumvented by planting a new meme into the mix? Memetics (from meme, rhymes with cream) can be thought of as "germ theory applied to ideas". And, as we know, ideas have a life of their own. Meme is similar to "idea" but not all ideas are automatically memes. For it to become a meme, it must be passed along to, and take root in, others. Either directly - like talking - or indirectly - as in writing. In theory, there are two levels of evolution, genetic and memetic, loosely tied together. That said, it would appear a new memetic virus (if you will) has been introduced to directly combat the archetypal imagery that has served us so well for eons. It may very well be an unconscious act - the idea, perpetrated in popular media as of late, that extraterrestrials are not to be trusted, that "they" are against "us", that every off-world species is, in the parlance of one popular movie (and animated tv series), "the scum of the universe". And who, in this time of need, should we turn to? You guessed it. The Men in Black. The sheer number of movies, tv shows, etc. that have, as of late, portrayed alien species as "the enemy" is amazing. Add to that, the fact the old yin and yang - us vs them - Soviet communism vs. American democracy - is no longer there and one cannot help but wonder. Yes, you say, but they're only movies. Yes, indeed, and if that was where it stopped it would be as laughable as it sounds. It isn't the product itself, that is secondary - that is the 'delivery system', as it were. It is the underlying message, the idea, the meme - embedding itself in each viewer, listener, and reader, much like that implant in Strieber's ear - that one should worry about. Memes can override genetic survival - and have, many times, in the past. Thirty nine 'Heavens Gate' cult members committing group suicide to catch a ride on a comet, and the kamikaze bombers of WWII, are but two examples where a meme - one religious, the other nationalistic - so influenced people that their own survival became inconsequential. The purpose of this article is not to scare you. Or upset you. Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy. It is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an umbrella. Drink water. Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body. Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician. Slow down. Avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Stay indoors when possible. KNOW WHAT THESE HEAT-RELATED TERMS MEAN Heat wave: More than 48 hours of high heat (90F or higher) and high humidity (80 percent relative humidity or higher) are expected. Heat index: A number in degrees Fahrenheit that tells how hot it really feels with the heat and humidity. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15F. Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. They usually involve the abdominal muscles or the legs. It is generally thought that the loss of water and salt from heavy sweating causes the cramps. Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is less dangerous than heat stroke. It typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a warm, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Fluid loss causes blood flow to decrease in the vital organs, resulting in a form of shock. With heat exhaustion, sweat does not evaporate as it should, possibly because of high humidity or too many layers of clothing. As a result, the body is not cooled properly. Signals include cool, moist, pale or flushed skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea or vomiting; dizziness; and exhaustion. Body temperature will be near normal. Heat stroke: Also known as sunstroke, heat stroke is life-threatening. The victim's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. The body temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may result if the body is not cooled quickly. Signals include hot, red and dry skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse; and rapid, shallow breathing. Body temperature can be very high--sometimes as high as 105oF. GENERAL CARE FOR HEAT EMERGENCIES . . . 1.Cool the Body 2.Give Fluids 3.Minimize Shock Heat cramps/heat exhaustion: Get the person to a cooler place and have him or her rest in a comfortable position. Give a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes. Do not let him or her drink too quickly. Do not give liquids with alcohol or caffeine in them, as they can make conditions worse. Remove or loosen tight clothing and apply cool, wet cloths such as towels or wet sheets. Heat stroke: Heat stroke is a life-threatening situation! Help is needed fast. Call 9-1-1 or your local EMS number. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the body. Wrap wet sheets around the body and fan it. If you have ice packs or cold packs, place them on each of the victim's wrists and ankles, in the armpits and on the neck to cool the large blood vessels. (Do *not* use rubbing alcohol because it closes the skin's pores and prevents heat loss.) Watch for signals of breathing problems and make sure the airway is clear. Keep the person lying down. Global warming has increased ocean levels by more than one millimetre (0.04 inch) a year for the past century but since 1960 the Mediterranean has lost as much as 1.3 millimetres (0.05 inch) annually. "The change is dramatic," said Michael Tsimplis, of the Southampton Oceanography Centre in southern England. He discovered the discrepancy by analysing long-term tidal gauges on the sea. Tsimplis attributes much of the problem to increased salinity and density as well as dam building. (Reuters, 16 June 00) [] LOCUST PLAGUE PERU Peru's military is sending helicopters with fumigation equipment and soldiers armed with flame throwers against swarms of locusts that have ravaged some 17,200 acres (7,000 hectares) of crops. The estimated 150 million locusts posed a threat to this Andean nation where agriculture provides a livelihood for millions of peasants, government officials said on Tuesday. The locusts have eaten maize, barley, rice and beans that are grown largely for home consumption or sold in local markets around the northern regions of Cajamarca and Lambayeque. Authorities said locust numbers jumped after vegetation sprouted up in northern Peru following freak El Nino weather in 1998 that warmed Peruvian sea waters and caused heavy rains along the coast. While locusts have always existed in Peru, this is the first time since 1982 that there has been a plague of the insects. (Reuters, 21 June 00) [] U.S. DECLARES AGRICULTURAL DISASTER IN FOUR STATES U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman on Friday declared parts of Alabama, Florida, Nebraska and New Mexico agricultural disaster areas due to a devastating drought. "This has been a devastating year for America's farmers and ranchers following last year's drought and historically low prices," Glickman said. The disaster declaration covers 64 of Alabama's 67 counties, 41 of Florida's 67 counties, 17 of Nebraska's 93 counties and 27 of New Mexico's 33 counties. (Reuters, 26 June 00) [] MASS EVACUATION AS FLOODS HIT NORTHEASTERN INDIA Flash floods caused by heavy rains and overflowing rivers have driven some 2.5 million people from their homes in India's remote northeastern state of Assam, government officials said on Saturday. "Flood waters at several places of upper Assam, especially in Jorhat and Dibrugarh washed away roads and bridges and more than 200 villages in Dhemaji district have been submerged under water," Manoj Deb, a government spokesman told Reuters by phone from the state capital Dispur. Deb said an estimated 2.5 million people affected by the floods have been shifted to high ground and highways. The Assam government has opened more than 25 relief camps to provide food and shelter to the affected. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said the report, "Evaluation of Erosion Hazards," provided the first comprehensive assessment of coastal erosion and its impact on people and property. The Atlantic and Gulf coasts account for 45 percent of the U.S. coastline and are home to 63 percent of the structures within 500 feet (150 metres) of the coastline. The nation's highest average erosion rates occur along the Gulf of Mexico, which loses some six feet (180 cms) or more per year. Average losses on the Atlantic are two to three feet (60 to 90 cms) per year, but FEMA said the numbers can vary greatly depending on where violent storms hit. A hurricane or other high impact storm can wipe away 100 feet (30 metres) or more of coast in a single day. On the brighter side, the report said highly protected areas of large East Coast cities, like New York, would not be adversely affected. The death toll from diseases such as AIDS, malaria and diarrhoea is 160 times greater than the number killed in last year's natural disasters including the earthquakes in Turkey, floods in Venezuela and cyclones in India. Diseases that were once under control are re-emerging, said the World Disaster Report by the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC). The report said public health disasters were worsened because governments were abandoning their responsibilities for preventive health care while growing urbanisation, climate change and environmental damage increased public health risks. While infectious diseases have claimed the most lives, they are also the most preventable disasters. The report said that most of last year's 13 million deaths from infectious disease could have been prevented at a cost of $5 per person. Lava flowed 1,800 feet down the slopes of the volcano. It was the most violent eruption this year. Villages lying southeast of Mount Etna received some ash fallout. On 5 JUNE, the Mount Etna Volcano sent a plume of ash two miles high into the sky. The ash darkened the sky to a degree that it resembled a solar eclipse. Monday's eruption was the 61st to occur in 2000. On 15 JUNE, the Mount Etna Volcano exploded for approximately 45 minutes. The eruption originated from a crater located on the volcano's southeastern slopes. Lava flowed in the direction of the Bove Valley. The ash from the explosion covered the eastern slope. Ash clouds have been 400-500 m high and are accompanied by deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes. The Alert Level at Anak Krakatau remains at 2. Eruptions are still continuing as of 9 JUNE. (21 June report) * PITON DE LA FOURNAISE, Reunion, Indian Ocean (21.23S, 55.71E) A new eruption occurred on 23 JUNE at the Piton de la Fournaise Volcano. The eruption originated on the Southeast flank of the Dolomieu crater. Seven lava fountains sent projections up to 50 m high. Two lava flows are active. Since the beginning of the eruption on 23 June, numerous seismic events have occurred under the central cone between sea level and 1 km above, with magnitudes up to 2.2. These events are unusual for the Piton de la Fournaise Volcano and might indicate the formation of further vents in the near future. * WHITE ISLAND, New Zealand (37.52S, 177.18E) As of 15 JUNE, the Alert Level at White Island remains at 2. On 8 June, the MH vent was producing a plume that rose to 2500-3000 feet (800-1000 m). The seismic activity has decreased and is almost to background levels. Ash emission has occurred almost continuously for the past 50 days. Past activity at White Island indicates that significantly larger eruptions could occur with little or no warning. As of 27 JUNE, the White Island Volcano remains at Alert Level 2 and is still erupting ash, steam, and gases. The active vent has increased in size. During the past week, the eruption plume was usually extended 15 kilometers downwind from the volcano. * SOUFRIERE HILLS, Montserrat, West Indies (16.7N, 62.2W) Between 16-23 JUNE, the broadband seismic network recorded a total of 147 rockfall signals, 11 hybrid earthquakes, 1 volcano-tectonic and 77 long period earthquakes. The rockfall activity appears to be occurring in a number of sectors on the dome, and a small pyroclastic flow occurred on 20 JUNE which originated from the old dome above the Gages valley. Observations of the top of the dome show that it is higher than in the period immediately before the last big collapse on 20 March. Material is rapidly filling the crater on all sides. Rockfalls and pyroclastic flows are anticipated in the valleys around the volcano. As the dome continues to grow, a substantial collapse is possible at any time.
